Brazilian jiu-jitsu mats

Grappling is the discipline that loads a mat the most: continuous skin-to-mat contact, damp gis, packed groups. It is also the one where a skin case does the most damage.

BJJ mat cleaning combines tile disassembly, seam vacuuming, dry steam on both faces and registered disinfection. It targets the pathogens specific to grappling, staph and ringworm first, which survive in the grain of the vinyl and under the tiles, where the daily mop never goes.

What grappling does to a mat

One hour of rolling is dozens of people in prolonged contact with the same surface, often face and forearms directly on the vinyl. Sweat soaks into the grain, gis shed fibres and dead skin, and body heat keeps the mat damp longer than in a striking room.

The result: a greasy film on the surface, and under the tiles, a damp zone nobody sees.

The pathogens of grappling

These are not edge cases: skin infections are among the top reasons a practitioner stops training.

  • Staph and MRSA: enter through mat burns, survive for days on a dry surface
  • Ringworm: a fungal spore passed skin-to-mat-to-skin, one case often sidelines a whole group
  • Impetigo: bacterial, highly contagious in a group that rolls six nights a week
  • Molluscum and warts: less serious, but they also travel through the mat

Puzzle tiles, smooth tatami or roll-out mats

Puzzle tiles have the most seams: that is where dirt and moisture settle, and that is why we take them apart. Smooth or textured tatami tiles hold less in the grain but build up underneath. Vinyl roll-out mats on foam have few seams, but stitching and an underside that never dries on its own. The protocol adapts to each surface; tell us what is on your floor.

What your staff does between two visits

Our visit does not replace daily disinfection. What works: a mop with disinfectant after every class block, a clean gi and rashguard for every session, a shower after training, no shoes on the mat, no bare feet off the mat. A skin case reported early is one member off the mat for a few days instead of a whole group.

FAQ

What gym owners ask us

How often should a BJJ school have its mats deep cleaned?

Every 4 to 8 weeks depending on class volume. A school running six nights a week with full groups sits around 4 weeks.

Does steam damage puzzle tiles?

No. Dry steam carries very little water and does not soak the foam. The water extractor is the problem, not the steam.

Do you have to take the whole surface apart?

Yes. Treating only the surface leaves the seams and the underside untouched, where moisture and pathogens settle. Disassembly is what separates a deep clean from a wash.

Can you work between two classes?

Yes, if the window is long enough for your area. Overnight or the closing day stays the simplest.
