Emergency decontamination

A confirmed case in a group is a transmission chain to break fast. We move you to the front of the schedule, treat the full surface, and tell you when to resume.

Emergency decontamination is a priority intervention after a confirmed case of ringworm, staph, impetigo or herpes gladiatorum in a combat sports gym. Full reinforced protocol across the entire training surface, not just the area of the case, with written recommendations for resuming classes.

When to call

As soon as a member or a coach reports a confirmed medical diagnosis, or several people in the same group show similar lesions. Waiting to see whether it spreads is the worst option: these infections pass skin-to-mat-to-skin, and a dry mat does not eliminate them.

  • Ringworm in one or more members
  • Staph, including MRSA
  • Impetigo in a kids’ or adult group
  • Herpes gladiatorum in a wrestling team

What we do differently

The protocol is the same as a deep clean, with three differences: we treat the entire training surface and not just the affected group’s area, we apply the disinfectant for the maximum dwell time the manufacturer prescribes, and we also treat the contact surfaces around the mat (edges, padded walls, benches, handles) depending on what you have on site.

Resuming classes

The mat is ready after drying. But breaking the chain also takes action on people: infected members must be treated and kept off the mat until medical clearance, and skin hygiene (shower after training, gi and rashguard washed after every session) must be restated to the whole group. The visit report contains these recommendations, ready to share with your members.

After the emergency

A skin case is often a sign the routine was not enough. After the intervention, we propose a deep-clean interval matched to your volume, so you do not relive the same situation six months later.

FAQ

What gym owners ask us

How fast can you intervene?

A client under contract moves to the front of the calendar. For a new gym, we give you a slot at first contact, depending on availability, always outside your class hours.

Do I have to close the gym?

Not necessarily. The intervention happens outside class hours. Whether to cancel classes before the intervention is your call and your doctor’s; we help you make it.

Does the disinfection eliminate ringworm?

The protocol combines the heat of the steam and a registered disinfectant applied for the prescribed dwell time, on both faces of the tiles and in the seams, where spores settle. The surface is reset; the rest depends on people’s hygiene.

Do you have to notify public health?

That is not our role, and most cases do not require it. If in doubt about a diagnosis or an outbreak, your CLSC or Info-Santé 811 can guide you.

An outbreak costs more than a cleaning.
